If you’ve bought yourself a brand new BMX and you plan to start learning tricks, then there is a chance you will be wanting to head down to a skate park. However, there are a few things to remember for those who haven’t been to such a place before.

Whether you have a cheap BMX or something top of the range, the chances are at first you will be very much finding your feet with the best way to control the bike. At a skate park many of the people there will be very adept at handling their bike and so if you are flailing all over the place and getting in people’s way, there is a good chance that sooner or later you are going to start annoying people.

So, when you take your BMX down for the first time make sure you take some time to watch what other people do before you dive right in. Different skate parks will have their own rules (many will have signs up so always make sure you read these and follow the rules) and watching how other people use the park will help you have a much better understanding when you take to the ramps yourself.

Remember to wear protective gear – especially at first when you are likely to be less confident at handling the ramps and jumps. Also, remember to be honest with people – people are much more likely to help you out if they are aware you are just starting out than if you go there guns blazing and being cocky.

Be polite and wait your turn, and don’t be afraid to learn from others. Finally, whether you have a cheap BMX or not, you need to know yours and the bike’s limits. So take it slow until you know what you are both capable of.
