Surgery is the first procedure in the treatment of various solid cancers. Surgery and other insidious measures work by taking out the tissues with cancer. For treating the esophageal cancer, an esophagectomy can be done as an attempt to take out some or all the tissues with the cancer. The other invasive measures may also be undertaken to assist in providing the nutrition when the esophagus closes down. This includes keeping a feeding tube and also maintenance of a channel via the esophagus. These final two procedures are termed as palliative as their goal is to not cure the cancer but to relieve the symptoms.

Very frequently, the stomach will be pulled up into the chest and will be joined to the top end of the esophagus, over the cancer. In some of the cases, a synthetic tube or even a tiny piece of intestine will be substituted as a replacement of missing division of esophagus.

Together with the esophagus disease part, the doctor will also take out all the lymph node which is found to be suspicious. Some of the other organs in that area may also be taken out. It may be partially taken for restricting the surgery usefulness for the extensively spread disease.

The patient may be required to be in the hospital for many weeks because of the widespread character of the surgery and the heavy rate of serious complications.
